Melissa J. Knight specializes in providing a broad array of legal services to community associations, including condominium associations and homeowners associations. Ms. Knight advises officers, directors, and property managers on not-for-profit corporate governance, interpretation and enforcement of governing documents and statutes, and compliance with administrative rules and regulatory processes. She also represents her clients before administrative and judicial tribunals, and in alternative dispute arenas, such as arbitration proceedings and mediation and settlement conferences, in order to resolve a myriad of legal issues, including  real estate disputes, landlord/tenant matters, covenant and deed restriction enforcement, contract disputes, debt collection and foreclosure matters, and other injunctive and declaratory relief.  

Prior to joining Bush Ross, Ms. Knight worked in the administrative and regulatory field as a Staff Attorney for the Southwest Florida Water Management District. She also brings a wealth of judicial administration experience to her position at Bush Ross, as she served for several years as a Judicial Staff Attorney to many county and circuit court judges at the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.

Honors & Recognitions

During law school, Ms. Knight received a book award in Legal Drafting, as well as honors in Legal Research & Writing and the Gator TeamChild Juvenile Law Clinic. Given her strong legal research and drafting skills and her passion for social justice issues, Ms. Knight was asked to serve as a Research Assistant to Professor Joan D. Flocks in the Social Policy Division for the Center for Governmental Responsibility. Professor Flocks later recognized Ms. Knight for her research in her Article, Joan D. Flocks, The Environmental and Social Injustice of Farmworker Pesticide Exposure, 19 Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law & Policy 255 (2012), available at


Ms. Knight is a native-born Floridian, who was raised on the Space Coast in Merritt Island, Florida. Ms. Knight also lived abroad for three years in Honduras, Central America, where she served in the Peace Corps as a Natural Resources Management and Urban Youth Development volunteer. She is fluent in Spanish. Ms. Knight is married to fellow University of Florida Levin College of Law graduate, Philip Nodhturft, III, who was born and raised in Tampa, Florida.
